These are the top ten “red flags” of an uneducated dog trainer
- Has no nationally-recognized credentials or training. Claims to be “self-taught”.
- Calls themselves a “behaviorist” and is not a DVM/PhD.
- Guarantees your dog’s behavior after their training program.
- Touts the “Dog Whisperer” as an expert.
- Does not use any food or toys in training.
- Uses a “training collar” (shock collar) or a prong or choke collar.
- Advises people to be “dominant” over their dogs.
- Does not take continuing education classes or seminars.
- Claims to use “all methods” of dog training.
- Has experience training only working dogs (miliary / police dogs) and is advertising to pet dog owners.
If you are looking for an educated, credentialed dog trainer, you should consult a site like the Pet Professional Guild.
